AFIAtria Fibrillation Investigators 1993 pooled study. A report with data pooled from 5 randomised trials comparing warfarin and/or aspirin with control in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and an increased risk of stroke due to co-morbidities of hypertension, prior transient ischaemic attack or diabetes.
Conclusion Warfarin consistently reduced—up to 68%—the risk of stroke in patients with AF with virtually no increase in major bleeding. Patients under age 65 without risk factors are at very low risk of stroke even if untreated.
