an enzyme of the glycolytic (Embden-Meyerhof) pathway that catalyzes the conversion of fructose-6-phosphate to fructose-1,6-bisphosphate using ATP as the source of the phosphate. Allosteric enzyme regulating glycolysis.

p. deficiency
inherited disorder of glucose metabolism in English springer spaniel dogs. Affected dogs develop a chronic hemolytic anemia. Called also Type 7 glycogen storage disease.
