1. DNP; an inhibitor of oxidative phosphorylation. Acts by uncoupling electron flow from phosphorylation. Used as a haptenic immunogen in immunology.
2. a herbicide toxic to animals. Effects are similar to those of dinitro-orthocresol. See also dinitro compounds.
