2,3-bisphosphoglycerate, diphosphoglycerate a product of glucose metabolism; binds strongly to deoxyhemoglobin. High concentrations are found in erythrocytes. Regulates oxygen-carrying capacity of hemoglobin. b. mutase an enzyme in the Embden-Meyerhof pathway of glycolysis in eyrthrocytes. Inherited deficiency results in a hemolytic anemia. Called also diphosphoglycerate mutase. b. pathway the sequence of reactions in erythrocytes which conduct the conversion of glucose to energy.
