naphthol [naf´thol] a phenol occurring in coal tar in two forms: α- or 1-naphthol and β- or 2-naphthol. It is used in dyes, insecticides, and pharmaceutical compounds. If excessive amounts are ingested, poisoning may result, characterized by anemia, jaundice, convulsions, and coma.
